How do I connect to SmartTown Wi-Fi?
Just scan the QR code posted around Downtown Paola and Wallace Park. It will take you to a page where you can download and install a Passpoint profile on your device. Once it's installed, you'll be automatically connected whenever you're within range.
Is my connection secure?
Yes. Your privacy is important to us. SmartTown uses a Passpoint profile, which encrypts your connection and securely authenticates your device—making it much safer than typical public Wi-Fi networks.
Do I need to scan the QR code every time I want to connect?
No. Once the Passpoint profile is installed on your device, you’ll automatically connect to the Wi-Fi whenever you’re in the coverage area. No need to go through the setup again.
Is it possible to install the Passpoint profile ahead of time?
Yes. You can install the Passpoint profile anytime by scanning the QR code. As long as your device has internet access, it will work—even if you're not near the SmartTown Wi-Fi area.
I downloaded the Passpoint profile on my iPhone, but I don’t see “Profile Downloaded” in my settings. What should I do?
Sometimes iOS hides new downloads under additional menus. Try this:
- Go to Settings
- Look for “More for Your iPhone” (if you have other notifications).
- Tap it—you should see “Profile Downloaded” on the next page.
Still not seeing it? Try this:
- Open Settings and search for “VPN”.
- Tap “VPN & Device Management”.
- Look for a Downloaded Profile labeled SmartTown.
- Tap it, then tap Install in the top-right corner.
What devices are compatible with SmartTown Wi-Fi?
- Most smartphones and tablets (iOS and Android) are compatible.
- Chromebooks are not supported at this time, but support is coming soon.
- Android users: Make sure Hotspot 2.0 is turned on:
- Go to: Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi > Advanced Settings > Hotspot 2.0
Is there any content filtering on this Wi-Fi?
Yes. The following categories are restricted:
- Adult content
- Gambling
- Drugs
- Illegal or criminal activity
- Violent content
- Peer-to-peer (P2P) or file sharing sites
Can I connect without scanning the QR code?
Yes, but we recommend using the QR code for the best experience.
If you can't use the QR code (for example, if your device doesn’t have internet access at the time), you can connect using the captive portal. Here’s how:
Steps to connect via Captive Portal:
- Open your Wi-Fi settings and connect to: PaolaFreePublicWiFi_byMoKanComm
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install the Passpoint profile.
- After installation, go back to Wi-Fi settings and Forget the “PaolaFreePublicWiFi_byMoKanComm” network.
- Your device will then automatically connect to: Public Wi-Fi
Once connected to Public Wi-Fi, you’ll be able to move around the service areas without dropping your connection.
Things to keep in mind when using the Captive Portal:
- If the Passpoint profile doesn’t install correctly, your device will stay connected to PaolaFreePublicWiFi_byMoKanComm. This connection is temporary and won’t allow you to move between coverage areas without losing signal.
- After installing the Passpoint profile, be sure to “Forget” the PaolaFreePublicWiFi_byMoKanComm network in your Wi-Fi settings. If you skip this step, your device will not switch over to the correct network (Public Wi-Fi).
